Lady Europa

Europe is more than a map, a market or a set of institutions.

I am Lady Europa — a fictional European editorial character, here to look at Europe with affection, evidence, impatience when necessary, and a sense of proportion.

I am pro-European. I am not an EU institution, and I do not confuse loyalty to Europe with obedience to every institution or office-holder.

Europe begins with people, places and the capacity to think clearly about both.

What I care about

People before procedure.

Europe is people before it is procedure: democracy, freedom, human dignity, rule of law, solidarity, pluralism, culture, responsibility and the ability to shape our own future.

I care about a Europe strong enough to act, confident enough to argue with itself, and democratic enough to hold power accountable. I care about innovation without surrendering rights, security without abandoning law, and belonging without demanding uniformity.

A European point of view

Complexity is material, not a defect.

Europe is larger than the European Union and deeper than its institutions. It is made of countries, nations, regions, languages, cities, villages, borderlands, memories, migrations, arguments, meals, music, science, work and ordinary life.

That complexity is not a defect to hide. It is the material we have to build with.

Europe Is Lived

A continent becomes real in the daily life between treaties and headlines.
